AMU-IUC, under its Transversal Institutional Strengthening Sub-Project 7 (TISP7), trained caregivers from April 8-11, 2024, and officially inaugurated the 1st Daycare Center at AMU’s Kulfo Campus on April 11, 2024 with the presence of university higher officials. Click here to see more photos.

Dr. Fasil Eshetu, the Project Manager of AMU-IUC, explained that TISP7 emerged during the project’s second phase to address the low participation of women and it is designed to benefit them across sectors. Its core objective is to boost women's representation in leadership, academia, research, and community service; additionally, the sub-project ensures women's involvement and gains in other five sub-projects and outreach initiatives within the project, Dr. Fasil noted. The project will continue to work on expanding the activities started in other campuses of the university, Dr. Fasil revealed.

Dr. Damtew Darza, the university president, emphasizing the importance of daycare facilities in supporting women's involvement and productivity in workforce said that the newly inaugurated daycare center at Kulfo Campus supported by IUC serves as a model for future endeavors and offers multiple benefits beyond childcare.

Behailu Merdekios, Vice President of Research and Community Engagement and AMU-IUC Project Coordinator, expressing his gratitude to all involved in bringing the daycare center to fruition, he emphasized its significance in facilitating longitudinal research and supporting female staff at the university.

Dr. Genaye Tsegaye, the Leader of TISP7, outlined the initiatives aimed at achieving gender equality across the university. According to Dr. Genaye, establishing childcare centers across campuses aims to reduce the childcare burden on female staff and enhance their participation in various domains such as research, community engagement, teaching, and leadership. Furthermore, in addition to establishing daycare centers within the university, the project extends support to female staff in various capacities particularly aiding those pursuing PhD studies, Dr. Genaye remarked.

Mrs. Bayush Tesfaye, Coordinator of TISP7, noted that the training was specifically crafted for newly hired caregivers at the university. Its primary objective was to ensure the employees are prepared for their responsibilities before commencing work and enable them to execute their duties with competence and expertise. According to Mrs. Bayhush, the training covers various contents including health and safety, child development, behavior management, communication skills, child abuse prevention, documentation, and record-keeping.

Ms. Senait Sahle, the director of Women, Children, and Youth Affairs, highlighted the plan of establishing childcare centers across university campuses. According to her, the collaboration with IUC led to the opening of the first center at Kulfo Campus and she emphasized that IUC support to establish childcare facilities offers numerous opportunities for women and enhances their effectiveness in professional roles.
