Arba Minch University launches a Masters program in TEFL in the Department of English Language and Literature. Its first candidates are to join the university this summer. The program, unlike any other TEFL MA programs in the country, comes with new levels of qualification and contemporary courses.

Goals of the Training
The goals of the MA in TEFL programme are to produce English language teachers who

Know the general theories, approaches and trends that govern the learning and teaching of English in a foreign language context.

Understand current methods informing the learning and teaching of English Language globally and locally

Analyze and produce syllabuses, curriculums, teaching materials for secondary schools, colleges, and universities;

Design effective English language assessments and evaluate assessment methods for relevance and reliability in English language testing

Analyze and produce computer assisted language lessons
-
Examine the application of Literature and linguistics in English Language Teaching

Conduct specialized research in the areas of English language teaching and learning.
- Appreciate and inculcate into the learners the role of English Language Learning in Ethiopian context.
Specific Objectives of the MA in TEFL
The MA in TEFL programme has the following specific objectives of producing:

English language teachers for secondary schools, colleges, and universities;

Teacher trainers for English language teaching;

English language curriculum planners and syllabus designers;

English language teaching material developers for high schools and colleges;

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) practitioners;

English language test designers and evaluators, and
- Professionals who can conduct research in the areas of English language teaching and learning.
Admission Criteria
Academic: Candidates must have achieved a recognised Primary Degree in English Language or related courses, or a recognised post graduate Certificate and/or Diploma in Teaching English where appropriate. Good results in the entrance exam, language proficiency test, related work experience, and high standard previous academic achievement records are essential for admission to be granted.
Additional: candidates should have a basic computer proficiency and access to specific hardware and software.
Programme length
Full-time (20 months with one summer-break), Evening part-time (30 months with no summer break) and summer par-time (three summer seasons with thesis to be done during winter).

Course Offering Format
The course is to be offered in the modular form. This modular programme will be delivered over two academic years for the regular students. The MA Programme utilizes active learning methods, interactive workshops, seminars, tutorials, lectures and teaching practice. Skills development and contributions from practitioners in the field will form an integral part of the programme.
Assessment
This is just a summary. Details of assessments for each course are stated under the course details of each course. Assessment includes written assignments (term-papers), oral presentations, performance in practical attachments, teaching portfolio and student performance in the written examination which is held at the end of each course. A research dissertation must be submitted during the second year of the programme (Deadline End of May).
