AMU President, Dr. Damtew Darza, addressing the audience, informed that the College of Medicine and Health Sciences/CMHS/ began operation 16 years ago with three departments and it is now operating in 10 departments with 16 undergraduate and 7 masters’ programs. He adds that till date, AMU has produced 755 Medical Doctors; most of them are well placed and rendering their expertise in different parts of the country. Dr. Damtew noted that the graduate doctors of today are unique since they all passed the national exit exam and expressed his gratitude to the college's former & current management, instructors, and support personnel for their contributions to this result. AMU’s Teaching-cum- Referral Hospital will soon be partially operational and will have sub-specialty and specialty areas where medical professionals may advance their particular fields of expertise, he said.

In his key message to the graduates, Dr. Daniel Gebremichael, the former Advisor of the Federal Ministry of Health and the guest of honor of the day, said that although the activities being carried out as a country to improve the medical sector are showing results, the majority of the society is economically weak, affected by various infectious and non-infectious diseases, and still mothers and children are vulnerable to death during and after childbirth. Therefore, he advised the graduates to comprehend their country's and society's problems and should have strong passion and firmness in their profession. He also noted that as the medical field is always being updated and needs collaboration, medical professionals are expected to learn more, share that information to others, and provide compassionate, cooperative care to those in need in the community.

Three outstanding graduates, Dr. Biruk Tarekegn, with CGPA 3.91, Dr. Yohanis Simon with CGPA 3.83, Dr. Fikreab Kefale with CGPA 3.73 and Dr. Kidist Amtataw with CGPA 3.34, notching up the first position among 17 of her cohorts, have been prized special awards from CMHS.
