Mission

College of Social science & Humanities of AMU has a mission of offering relevant efficient and quality education and training; conducting demand driven research and rendering efficient community services.

According to the Ethiopian Higher Education Proclomation  No 650/2009 and its own charter(Council of Ministers Charter Regulation No 235/2011)  AMU is mandated to establish, organize and determine the status functions and responsibilities of academic units and close down any of them when the university finds it appropriate. Accordingly, College of Social Sciences and Humanities is established to function as an academic unit in the university.  The college is also mandated to

 

  • Design and implement graduate programs and short term trainings in accordance with the needs of the university
  • Publish and disseminate research works as well as hold discussions forums to deliberate upon the result
  • Establish and run academic journals and newsletters
  • Upgrade the qualifications of its academic staff and enhance continuously their professional competencies.
  • Contribute specially to the institutional capacity building of other public and non profit making private institutions including the upgrading of the qualifications of their academic status.
  • Provide consultancy services to governmental and non governmental organizations and the community
  • Co-operate with institutional quality assurance directorate on relevance of education and quality matters
  • Carry out such other activities that accord with its objectives and the mission, vision and objectives of the university

VISION

The Department of Ethiopian Languages and literature – Amharic aspires to be a resourceful and innovative college in the social and behavioral science and a center of excellence in indigenous  studies in Ethiopia by 2020.

  1. Training on English Language conducted for 56 secondary school English teachers of  Gamo Gofa Zone /120 Participants/
  2. Training on community service conducted for teachers of the CSSH and others
  3. Geography and Environmental Department is implementing project on environment protection
  4. Psychology Department  training on life-skill to Arba Minch Town secondary school female students
  5. Training was given for kindergarten teachers on behavioral science

The college has conducted the need assessment survey and developed curriculum's for ‘Gamotho and Gofatho language, Development and Environmental Management, Adult Education, and Communication and Media Studies.’

Social means people and science is a systematic study of any subject be it chemistry, physics or mathematics or any other subject.  In science, we have systematization, rationality and predictability applied universally and it is opposed to common sense.  Scientific truths or universal truths and its found true everywhere and scientific ideals are for everyone to cherish.  Social science involves  scientific study of economics, anthropology, sociology and other realms of human knowledge and study of society. The college of social science facilitates study of social science subjects in an academic setting  applied to various fields of economics, and other related subjects as history, languages and literature, geography and environmental studies. It is just that not only students are taught on theory but also practical applicability and its relevance in real life setting applied to Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular.

Ethiopian students would gain theory and practical knowledge in college of social science courses from expatriates and locals so that they can work in Ethiopia and elsewhere in business, education and industry or arts effectively. Academia in Arba Minch University is not just ideal but one that one can cherish effectively.  Social science learning at AMU can be fun and interesting, easy and one that one can use it life long in work and in real life effectively.   A good degree from a leading university in social science is one that one will get if one chooses to study social science at Arba Minch University.

Opportunities are getting rarer and rarer in today’s competitive world and one with a degree is preferred rather one without a degree.  And, in this context, it becomes noteworthy to acquire a  degree in social science from Arba Minch university to face real life society and real life challenges effectively in a competition filled world of tomorrow. Social science degrees are much sought after in developing and developed countries, and one can go for higher studies or further education in a field one has chosen.

Education is easier if one wants it to be or to have it that way and the learning goes on smoothly at AMU as for as social sciences are concerned. Set up in natural homely situation, AMU’s Chamo campus invokes nostalgic feeling to anyone.  Social science learning goes with natural settings and serene surroundings of Arba Minch and the formal and informal methods of learning are given importance. Life and academic work goes on smoothly here and when one puts in his time and do all academic and professional work regularly and routinely, one  gets off with a  degree into real world. It becomes easier to face challenges of today’s competitive world effectively in a fast paced environment whether in Ethiopia or elsewhere with a degree.

An international multidisciplinary scientific journal, Ethiopian Journal of Business and Social Science (EJBSS) is based in Arba Minch University, Ethiopia and publishes peer reviewed articles biannually in the various fields of business and economics, social sciences and humanities, behavioral and pedagogical science and law. In this guideline, we describe some basic considerations that authors should comply with when submitting their manuscripts for publication in EJBSS. EJBSS accepts peer-reviewed original scientific articles which are usually reports of empirical studies, literature reviews, theoretical articles, methodological articles, or case studies. Other, less frequently published types of articles include brief reports, comments and replies on previously published articles, book reviews, and monographs. EJBSS disseminates its publications to the scientific community in Ethiopia and elsewhere in the world. In this way, the journal aims to introduce Ethiopian academic achievements to the world community, by demonstrating the significance of Ethiopian scientific investigations. EJBSS is a non-profit academic journal based in Arba Minch University, Ethiopia.
