Arba Minch University Supported by International Water Management Institute running European Union-funded 3-year AGRUMIG project in Southern Ethiopia will be hosting a daylong ‘Regional policy dialogue workshop on migration’ at Haile Resort, Arba Minch, on November 5, 2019.

The press release issued by the office of Vice President for Research and Community Service states that this workshop is organized in Southern Ethiopian context to discuss issue of ‘migration, governance and agricultural change in Ethiopia: Rural outmigration and the impact on the livelihood of people left behind’.

In Ethiopia, northern part will come under the purview of Mekelle University; AMU supported by IWMI will look into southern and Haramayya backed by University of Vienna will train its focus on eastern part. Its prime objective is to understand complex ties between migration and agrarian change, to study how migration governance mediates relationship between migration on one and agricultural and rural change on other hands.

Further it will identify integration framework for migration governance that harnesses positive synergies between migration, agriculture and rural development. It will look into move towards integrated migration governance framework by supranational and national institutes that reduce distress from migration while harnessing mobility to promote gender equity and sustainable agrarian growth in sending region.

This workshop will focus on four key issues like ‘the link between migration and agriculture, rural change’, ‘the impact of migration on agriculture’, ‘identifying existing policy gaps related to migration governance’ and ‘understanding relationship between migration and agriculture in Southern Ethiopian context.

School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London is the overall coordinator of this project; it will encompass 7 countries i.e. Morocco, Ethiopia, Moldova, Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal, Thailand and China.

The 14 participating partners of this project are SOAS of University of London, University of Birmingham, IWMI, University of Vienna, University of Central Asia/Mountain Societies Research Institute, National Institute for Economic Research, University of Bologna, University of Mohammed V, Rabat, Social Science Baha/Centre for Study of Labor and Mobility, Raks Thai Foundation, OSCE Academy Bishek, Arba Minch University, Mekelle University and Centre Polis Asia; while Haramaya University and South China Agricultural University are two sub-contracting partners.

Apart from AMU officials, researchers, academicians, stakeholders from across the board are expected to grace the event.
