Faculty of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering
Ethiopia is highly endowed with substantial amounts of water resources potential; approximately 122BMC surface water and 40BMC groundwater (BMC = Billion Meter Cube). However, the contribution of these resources to socio-economic development of the country has been very low. One of the main reasons is lack of capacity in terms of trained manpower. Thus, in order to at least minimize the lack of skilled professionals and water engineers, the former Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI) was established in September 1986. The Faculty of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering is one of the very few senior faculties initially established as a Department of Hydraulic Engineering under this institute.
The faculty, in its 18 years of service, has trained a number of professionals which are contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the country in water and related sectors at different capacities. Up to its transformation to the Department of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering, the faculty has graduated many students at degree, advanced diploma and diploma level. To build its capacity, the faculty has benefited from the strong link to some of the German Universities (Siegen and Dresden University as well as Free University of Berlin) which was supported by a long term project (1986-2007) called ‘GTZ support to AWTI’ funded by the German Government. Among the 2 M.Sc. programmes launched in the institute in 2002, Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering is the first M.Sc. program in the faculty.
After 18 years of teaching and research experiences, the Institute was transformed and officially inaugurated to full-fledged University. In 2004, the University expanded the programs into MSc level. The first ever two programs were MSc in Irrigation Engineering and in Hydraulics/Hydropower Engineering. In 2006, Hydrology and Water Resources Management and in 2007 Meteorology Science were launched at M.Sc. level. Likewise, the recently launched MSc in Dam Engineering program can be considered a great success as the country is currently building so many hydropower, irrigation and water supply dams. Following the re-establishment of Water Technology Institute and a number of programs run under the department, the department was renamed as a Faculty of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering in September 2018.
Currently, the faculty has been actively running one Ph.D., 4 M.Sc. and one B.Sc. programs.
