Vision

AMU aspires to be one of the leading research universities in Ethiopia by 2030, for which, it will vigorously be involved in generation and incubation, transfer of appropriate technologies and knowledge, and partnering with stakeholders on problem-solving research that will stimulate the economic growth of the nation.

Mission

AMU has a mission of solving societal and environmental problems by conducting demand-driven, multidisciplinary, participatory research; adapting, incubating, and transferring appropriate technologies and knowledge that would contribute to the wellbeing of wider society and spur the development of the country.

Research Philosophy

The research philosophy of AMU is rooted in the pressing issues of the country. It focuses on finding solutions to the urgent and emerging problems and demands of the society that could be achieved through multidisciplinary research for knowledge generation, adaption/adoption, transfer, and advancement of technologies suitable for enhancing the wellbeing of the nation. Thus, AMU’s research shall follow the following fundamental principles and directives.

Research Theme

AMU’s research shall be based on the prioritized thematic research areas. The thematic areas shall be identified based on national, regional, and local developmental needs. The identification and revision of the themes shall be done in consultation with the concerned stakeholders.

Staff Responsibilities

All academic and research staff should actively and responsibly participate in the research activities as per the provision of workload articulated in the Senate Legislation of AMU.

Quality of Research

The research work should be participatory, original, scientific, demand-driven, and problem-solving and need to be carried out under the relevant professional code of ethics.

Capacity Building

AMU through its appropriate structure shall build the capacity of researchers and provide adequate time and facilities needed for research activities.

Leadership and Collaboration

The university management, academic staff, and researchers are responsible for creating a conducive environment for quality research practices. It will motivate all parties involved in research and foster an open exchange of ideas in the university. The research process shall be done in collaboration with other national and international higher education and research institutions, public sectors, governmental, non-governmental organizations, and donors when appropriate. It shall also encourage joint research among colleges and institute with appropriate inter-college and institute collaboration.

Assessment of research proposals and reports

Research proposals and reports shall be developed and submitted according to the accepted standards and schedule set for submission. Research proposals and reports shall be developed and evaluated thoroughly based on the assessment criteria and research proposal/report format of AMU.

Dissemination of Research Output

The research output(s) shall be disseminated through various channels i.e. workshops, conferences, symposia, proceedings, newsletters, leaflets, AMU website, journals, books, etc.

Language of Research

Research reports shall be in English, but also can be in Amharic or any other local languages as appropriate.

Evaluation and Reporting

A comprehensive research monitoring and evaluation shall be regularly conducted to assess how well the researchers met the set research objectives. Researchers are expected to submit the outcomes of the research activities as per the contractual agreement.

Research Project Management

The management of research projects shall be based on agreed conditions and principles mentioned in the research guidelines of the university.

Code of Conduct

All researchers in AMU need to be honest concerning their actions in research and responses towards other researchers. They must refrain from misconducts that are characterized by fabrication or falsification of research data and results; plagiarism, breach of confidentiality, misuse of research funds, illegal or unauthorized use of University property, inappropriately raising funds, and infringement of the University’s rules on intellectual goods and guidelines will be viewed with seriousness. Any alleged research misconduct will be considered a serious offense by the university and researchers are also required to declare their conflicts of interest.
