Program Overview

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Arba Minch University (AMU), established in 2005,  and offers a structured academic pathway from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Geography and Environmental Studies provides foundational knowledge in human and physical geography, spatial analysis, and environmental systems. At the postgraduate level, four Master of Science (MSc) programs—Land Resource Management, Environmental Change Management, Environment and Sustainable Development, and Geoinformatics, develop advanced knowledge, applied research skills, and problem-solving capabilities. PhD programs in Environment and Natural Resource Management and Disaster Risk Management prepare graduates for high-level research, policy development, and leadership roles.

The program has been committed to advancing knowledge, building professional capacity, and addressing critical environmental and societal challenges. Since its inception, the Department has aimed to prepare graduates to respond effectively to contemporary issues such as climate change, land degradation, water scarcity, urbanization, and sustainable development. Through a strong focus on spatial thinking and geospatial technologies, students acquire the skills necessary to analyze complex data, inform policy, and design practical solutions at local, national, and global levels.

The program is highly relevant to Ethiopia’s socio-economic development and community service. Graduates are equipped to provide technical expertise, conduct socio-economic and environmental assessments, and support evidence-based planning for government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. Nationally, the program contributes to achieving development objectives including climate adaptation, food security, and resilient urban planning. Globally, it supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by advancing research, environmental stewardship, and equitable development.

The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and applied research, integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial modeling, watershed management, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction. Fieldwork, internships, and community-based projects ensure practical experience and develop competencies directly relevant to employment in planning, environmental management, and policy advisory roles.

The Department is supported by a multidisciplinary faculty with expertise in geography, environmental science, natural resource management, geospatial technologies, and climate change studies. Modern teaching and research facilities;including GIS and Remote Sensing, Cartography and Surveying, Photogrammetry, and Soil laboratories, along with well-equipped classrooms enhance learning, research, and hands-on training opportunities.

Graduates emerge as highly competent professionals ready to pursue careers as educators, researchers, planners, policy advisors, and environmental specialists. They are equipped to drive sustainable development, contribute to evidence-based decision-making, and provide innovative solutions to complex environmental and societal challenges at local, national, and international levels.
