The primary objective of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies is to develop highly skilled professionals and researchers capable of addressing complex spatial, environmental, and socio-economic challenges. The program seeks to provide students with a strong foundation in human and physical geography, environmental systems, and geospatial sciences while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical training, the program aims to prepare graduates who can design and implement innovative solutions that promote sustainable development, natural resource management, and climate resilience.

Specifically, the program strives to:

  •      Equip students with advanced knowledge in geography, environmental science, and geospatial technologies to analyze and interpret spatial and environmental phenomena.
  •     Develop students’ research capacity and analytical skills to generate evidence-based solutions for sustainable resource use and environmental stewardship.
  •   Promote interdisciplinary learning and collaboration, enabling students to understand and address the interconnections between people, places, and environmental systems.
  •      Cultivate ethical responsibility, and professional competencies that empower graduates to contribute effectively to policy development, community engagement, and national development priorities.
  •     Strengthen capacity for field-based and applied research to solve real-world problems and support informed decision-making.

Through these objectives, the program aligns closely with Arba Minch University’s mission of producing competent graduates, generating relevant research, and delivering impactful community service, thereby contributing to Ethiopia’s long-term socio-economic transformation and global sustainability efforts.
