Horticulture - Arba Minch University

The Department of Horticulture was established in 2008, and since inception it’s churning out graduating both in UG and Master programs. As of now, it’s running BSc in Horticulture and would soon launch BSc in Food Science and Postharvest Technology. For Master programs, it’s training students in MSc in Horticulture and Postharvest Management.

Staff Profile

The department has got five local Assistant Professors in Horticulture, Fruit Biology and Post-Harvest Technology and an Indian Expatriate (Associate Professor) and over 9 lecturers. Two staff members are pursuing PhDs in Belgium and one at Hawassa universities. Seven of them are studying MSc in the same department and one at Hawassa University. It has two technical and two supportive staff as well.

The department wants to produce high-caliber professionals to conduct community problem-solving basic and applied researches to meet emerging needs and demands of country.

Offer trainings and free consultancy to community to build capacity

Vision

The department aspires to be a leading centre in imparting education and diversified training in Horticulture within AMU and in the country as well.

Mission

The department aims to design, establish and maintain globally-harmonized curricula in Horticulture, Post-Harvest Technology and Food Science to produce world-class professionals in terms of teaching, research, community services and technological innovation.

Admission criteria

The eligibility criteria for admission to BSc is in conformity with the admission requirement set forth by Ethiopian Higher Education Institutions upon successful completion of two-year preparatory education in natural science and pass the entrance exam by Ministry of Education and placement of students goes with affirmative regulation.

Re-admission and advance standing shall be treated according to Senate Legislation of AMU. Students graduated with diploma in the field of Horticulture, Plant Sciences, General Agriculture and related fields from recognized institutions can apply to pursue studies in summer and extension programs accordingly.

Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, Regional Research Institutes, Ethiopian Horticulture Development Agency, Arba Minch Agriculture Research Center, Ethiopian Horticulture Producer, Exporter Association; public universities, federal, regional, zonal and woreda agriculture offices.

Global Collaboration

It’s collaborating with esteemed global institutions i.e. Ghent University, KU Leuven, Belgium, Galilia University, Israel, Amazona Federal University, Sao Paulo State University and Embrapa Vegetables Research Center, Brazil.
