Overview
The Department of Biology at Arba Minch University has a rich history, beginning its teaching and learning process when Arba Minch Water Technology Institution was upgraded to Arba Minch University in 2004. Over more than 20 years, the department has undergone various stages of development, transitioning from a "Biology Unit" to a fully organized department. It is considered one of the leading and robust departments within the College of Natural and Computational Sciences at Arba Minch University. The study of biology encompasses basic and applied aspects, with the applied aspects finding practical applications in various fields such as agriculture, industry, medicine, biotechnology, and environmental protection.
The Department of Biology is dedicated to providing high-quality education and research with a team of over 65 qualified teaching and non-teaching staff members. The department's goal is to improve the teaching and learning process through research-based teaching methods. Research activities include projects led by staff members and postgraduate studies, focusing on conducting scientific research, providing training, and offering consultancy services in various biological disciplines and sectors. Additionally, the department is committed to providing various services and consultancies to different industries, such as food industries, bio fertilizers, land rehabilitation, food security, disease prevention and control, wildlife resources, and training on scientific writing and publication.
Vision
The department aims to cultivate responsible citizens and conduct sustainably demand-driven research in the biological sciences.
Mission
The Department of Biology is dedicated to serving the community and the nation through research and teaching by collaborative partnership between students and teachers working towards the country's growth and transformation plan.
Goals
- Ensure the quality of education and training.
- Conduct problem-solving, basic and/or applied research in various fields of biological sciences
- Establish systems and create conducive environment for research and teaching.
