Arba Minch University (AMU), in partnership with Ayuda en Acción, conducted a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program titled “Moringa: Good Agricultural Practices, Product Safety, and Quality” from December 2 to 4, 2025 at Arba Minch. The training brought together smallholder moringa producers from the Wolayita and Gamo zones of the South Ethiopia Region. It aimed to enhance participants’ technical capacity and promote improved practices in moringa cultivation, value addition, and market system development. Click here to see more photos.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation at AMU, emphasized that this session builds on last week’s training delivered to frontline government staff and private extension service providers. He noted that the core focus of this second-round ToT is to deepen participants’ understanding of moringa, commonly referred to as the “tree of life” or “miracle tree”, a plant widely recognized for its extensive medicinal and non-medicinal uses. “AMU will continue to fill the remaining gaps until the project achieves its overall goals,” Concluding his remarks, he expressed confidence that trainees will apply the knowledge at the grassroots level to enhance their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to improving moringa production among farmers in their associations and beyond.
Mr. Daniel Monjore, Coordinator of the Ayuda en Acción Project in the South Ethiopia Region, explained that the second-round ToT is designed to empower smallholder producers with key competencies, including optimal pre-planting and planting techniques for maximizing yields, strategic soil management, diversified moringa product development, quality assurance, effective pest and disease control, and exploration of complementary income opportunities such as beekeeping and animal feed production. He added that the training equips participants with skills to generate economic benefits from this valuable yet often overlooked tree by scaling up production, processing, and marketing practices.
