Dr. Demelash Wondimagegnew, the coordinator of the program, emphasized that the training primarily focuses on investigating geothermal energy. The objective of the field trip was to deepen trainees' knowledge of geothermal site investigations by offering hands-on experience with geophysical instruments and pH meters, crucial tools for accurate geothermal data collection and analysis.

Dr. Leulalem Shano, head of AMU’s Geology Department and co-coordinator of the program, explained that the team measured the temperature of hot springs on-site to determine the influence of different faults on geothermal springs. He added that the field trip provided an opportunity to demonstrate the use of advanced geophysical instruments and pH meters, helping to scale up the knowledge of both trainees and teachers.

Mr. Christophe Barnes, Associate Professor at CYU’s Department of Geosciences and Environment, shared that the collaboration between CYU and AMU is framed under the Addis Framework, with the aim of defining specific formations dedicated to obtaining geothermal licenses and funding. He also mentioned plans to develop second-degree programs in geothermal science and engineering with AMU, stressing that the field trip complements the training by helping trainees gather and analyze geothermal data.

In his concluding remarks, AMU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alemayehu Chufamo, highlighted the importance of the training for staff development and its potential to produce capable students in geothermal and green energy fields. He called for the institutionalization of the program within AMU’s Geology Department, encouraging the establishment of a strong team to further strengthen ties between AMU and CYU. Dr. Alemayehu also expressed his appreciation for the individuals who worked tirelessly to make the program a success, acknowledging their efforts in building a solid foundation for future collaborations between the institutions.
