Arba Minch University (AMU) marks “Project and Publication Day” celebration under the theme "Celebrating Achievements in Research, Projects and Publications" to bolster research culture in AMU on October 4, 2025; the event served to recognize accomplishments and strategize for a more robust research future. Abdella Kemal (PhD, Ing.) AMU President, said, celebrating the “Project and Publication Day” with such inspiration serves as a catalyst for change. He asserted that as a research university, AMU must focus on being a problem-solving institution for society. The need to recognize nationally and internationally achieved significant collaborations and research publications is to better motivate faculty to enable the university reach its desired research goals, he emphasized. Revealing future targets, Dr. Abdella also underscored that maximizing the number of significant collaborations and research results publishing is mandatory to keep AMU visible nationally and internationally. Therefore, the academic and research staff should shoulder the responsibility more than ever as AMU strives to achieve status of Research-led Autonomous University, he noted.
Teklu Wegayehu (PhD), Vice President for Research and Cooperation, reflecting on the day, said, the Project and Publication Day marks the celebration of our incredible journey of dedication, creativity and collaboration. He remarked, “This day not only showcases the individual talents but also highlights our strength of collaborative spirit; hence, I persistently urge and encourage you to take the insights gained and continue to push the collaborations forward.” Dr. Teklu also reaffirmed AMU's commitment to establishing high-quality research output prioritizing quality standards, rendering continuous follow-up, and establishing collaborations of essential global benchmarks whereas the staff should continue sharing work, seeking feedback, challenging own selves to push boundaries of respective fields to pave ways to new vista of understanding, growing in technology and innovation.
Simon Derkee (PhD), Director of the Publication, Documentation, and Dissemination Directorate, presented the university's publication outlook and reported significant achievements over the 2024/25 fiscal year noting the recent progress and emphasizing the need for collaborative effort from all stakeholders to enhance the number of quality publications. He highlighted the university's full commitment to securing national accreditation for all institutional journals and announced the procedure has begun to register some journals in internationally recognized databases like Scopus and the Web of Science.
Dr. Simon, furthermore, added that the crucial need to produce policy briefs and the importance of securing internationally registered patents to bolster the university's reputation. Giving a summary of the panel discussion, he noted it featured senior researchers who explored prevailing challenges and proposed strategies to improve the quality and dissemination of scholarly publications.
Ashenafi Hailu (PhD), Director for Grant and Collaborative Project Management (GCPM) Directorate, outlined a comprehensive new framework designed to systematize research. According to him, to incentivize participation, the new GCPM framework includes credit hour exemptions for principal investigators and annual awards for best grant winners.
The event culminated with a recognition ceremony of honoring outstanding contributions in winning significant collaborations as the “Best Grant Winner”, and top-publishing researcher as “Top Academic Publisher” and college or institute or school as the “Best Grant-Winner” or “Top Academic Publisher” in the year 2024/25. Accordingly, Yilkal Tadele (PhD, Assoc. Prof.) from the College of Agricultural Sciences, Abera Uncha (PhD, Assoc. Prof.) from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Negussie Boti (PhD, Asst. Prof.) from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences were recognized as the "Top Academic Publishers of the Year" significantly enhancing AMU's scholarly visibility and reputation from first to third respectively. Strengthening the university's research capacity, collaboration, and institutional credibility, Wondwossen Jerene (PhD, Asst. Prof.) from the College of Business and Economics, standing first, Dr. Tamiru Shibru (Assoc. Prof.) from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, second, and Ashenafi Hailu (PhD, Asst. Prof.) from the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, third, were honored as the "Best Grant Winners".
Lastly, in recognition of college or institute or school bases contributions on the same umbrella, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) received dual honors as both the "Top Academic Publishing" and "Best Grant Winning" College solidifying its leading role in advancing AMU's research landscape.
AMU looks to the future as it remains committed to enhancing research capabilities and fostering conducive environment to impact studies that address pressing societal issues. The celebration of “Project and Publication Day” marks a pivotal step toward achieving these ambitious goals.
