Arba Minch University (AMU) hosted a pivotal meeting focused on critically examining the future of its postgraduate programs on September 22, 2025. The meeting aimed to identify challenges, evaluate progress, and set a transformative roadmap for postgraduate studies at AMU. Abdella Kemal (PhD, Ing.), AMU President, stressed the urgency for all stakeholders to actively engage in AMU’s academic, research and community engagement initiatives to achieve excellence as an autonomous research-led institution. The president also urged all university employees to take responsibility for revitalizing postgraduate education, working in synergy to put plans into action, and realize the best version of the university. AMU aims to set the benchmark for transforming postgraduate education in the region while fostering collaborations with global institutions, he underlined.
Bogale G/Mariyam (PhD, Ing.), Vice President for Academic Affairs, said that AMU must work hard keeping the eye on the strategic issues to evolve as a fully-fledged research university. He emphasized the importance of identifying strengths, weaknesses, and responsibilities to address both current challenges and future aspirations. As a research university we face significant pressures, but these pressures can drive change if we collaborate effectively, Dr. Bogale remarked. He added that the meeting was opportunity to exchange ideas, conducts self-assessment, and collectively work toward achieving institutional excellence.
Prof. Yisehak Kechero (PhD), Director of the School of Graduate Studies Directorate (SGS), said, the university has taken significant steps to address the challenges faced by postgraduate students and programs. His comprehensive analysis drew lessons from other institutions, outlined a series of challenges facing AMU's postgraduate education, academic & administrative hurdles with curriculum internationalization, admission criteria, student admission and academic progress, and lengthy completion times.
The quality assurance concerns over the postgraduate curriculum, research quality, PhD programs, systemic issues, budget cash flow, time management and publication output, better collaboration and student exchange programs with foreign institutions are areas that need due attention, Prof. Yisehak noted . Despite the challenges, he also highlighted, several prospects including growing impact of digitalization, new funding possibilities, opportunities to integrate university reforms with national policies, and the potential to increase enrollment through better communication and motivation packages.
The meeting underscored AMU’s commitment to making meaningful progress in postgraduate education.
