Arba Minch University (AMU) commemorated the enduring professional legacy of Dr. Simon Shibru through a series of programs held at its Abaya Campus on September 5, 2026, highlighting his remarkable contributions to academia, research, university leadership, biodiversity conservation, and natural resource management. As a lasting tribute to his scholarly and professional contributions, the University also named its Biodiversity Research and Conservation Center after Dr. Simon Shibru. In his opening remarks, Dr. Ing. Abdella Kemal, AMU President, emphasized that Dr. Simon Shibru’s greatest achievements and enduring legacy extend far beyond his research publications. His contributions, he noted, will continue through the students he taught, the young researchers he mentored, the colleagues with whom he worked, and the institutions he served. He likened Dr. Simon’s dedication and professional contributions to a deeply rooted tree whose branches continue to provide shade for many. He further noted that naming the Center for Biodiversity Research and Conservation after Dr. Simon Shibru represents a lasting tribute to his legacy and meaningful recognition of his contributions to the academic and research community.
In his remarks, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation, noted that the commemorative event was the first of its kind in the University’s history. He said the event provided an opportunity to reflect on Dr. Simon Shibru’s professional journey and his commitment to advancing knowledge, research, and nature conservation, while honoring his achievements and reaffirming the University’s commitment to building on his work. He further highlighted that the Center established in his name will provide a platform for continued studies, research, scientific publications, and innovative work. The planned Museum of Natural History, he added, will further contribute to preserving and showcasing knowledge associated with his work. Together, these initiatives will help carry his contributions forward and inspire future generations of researchers. He also expressed the University’s continued solidarity with Dr. Simon’s family, friends, and relatives.
Dr. Demis Admasu, Administrator of the Gamo Zone, recalled Dr. Simon Shibru as a distinguished scholar of exemplary character who generously shared his extensive knowledge and experience with the local community and the nation at large. He noted that Dr. Simon’s contributions would remain cherished in the hearts and memories of future generations. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Arba Minch University for its exemplary initiative in recognizing the scholar’s contributions by naming its Biodiversity Research and Conservation Center after him.
At the event, Dr. Agena Anjulo, a colleague of Dr. Simon and former Vice President of Arba Minch University, delivered a commemorative presentation highlighting his professional journey, contributions, and achievements. He described Dr. Simon as a distinguished scholar and natural-born educator with a remarkable ability to inspire and mentor students and researchers. He further noted that Dr. Simon was internationally recognized for his work in biodiversity conservation, plant science, animal ecology, and ecosystem ecology, with numerous research papers published in prestigious international journals. Dr. Agena emphasized that Dr. Simon’s research was consistently focused on addressing real-world problems and generating tangible benefits for the community.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Eng. Bogale Gebremariam, Vice President for Academic Affairs, commended Dr. Simon’s remarkable dedication and resilience, noting that he remained committed to teaching, student advising, and leadership responsibilities even while critically ill. He called for the Center named in Dr. Simon’s honor to be developed into a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence, ensuring that his work continues to inspire and advance academic and research endeavors.
Senior officials and members of the Senate of Arba Minch University, the Chief Administrator of the Gamo Zone, the Mayor of Arba Minch City Administration, researchers, colleagues, family members, and invited guests attended the event.
