Arba Minch University (AMU) recently held a two-day PhD supervision training aimed at enhancing the advisory and coaching skills of its academic staff at Main Campus from October 13-14, 2025. Dr. Eng. Bogale Gebremariam, AMU Academic Affairs Vice President, said, Ethiopian Super-stars project brings together seven leading universities: Addis Ababa, Ambo, Arba Minch, Bahir Dar, Jimma, and Mekele in a shared vision to strengthen the quality of PhD supervision and research mentorship in higher education institutions. It is a strategic platform for building a culture of academic excellence, professional integrity, and effective mentorship, Dr. Eng. Bogale noted. “Let us use this opportunity to learn, reflect, connect, share our experiences and grow together as academic leaders and mentors,” Dr. Eng. Bogale underscored. He also appreciated VLIR-UOS for its generous support and Jimma University from Ethiopian side and Ghent University from Belgium for their strong coordination.

Professor Yisehak Kechero, Director for AMU School of Graduate Studies and the training organizer, welcoming the trainees noted that the training is basically financed by AMU and Ethiopian Super-Star project. The ultimate goal of this training is to enhance the capacity, skills, attitudes and knowledge of handling PhD students in shaping future academic leaders across different disciplines at AMU, he remarked. The training is impactful because the soft skills the PhD students need from their advisors and mentors are acquired from the inspiring and insightful training, Professor Yisehak explained, and equivalent trainings are being carried out in seven universities including AMU in Ethiopia.

Dr. Dejene Hailu (Associate Professor in Public Health), the trainer from Hawassa University, said, the training has a landmark importance for the trainees to enhance their capacity to mentor their PhD students which is the responsibility of a research university to produce independent researchers who identify the problems and bring solutions to solve.

Dr. Alemayehu Worku, one of the trainees from AMU College of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Animal Health, opined that the training is essential for us because it is based on how to motivate PhD students using different models and gives clear pictures on how to guide and supervise them.
