Arba Minch University Senate in its 25th August, 2020, communiqué has stated that six of its senior academic staff members have been elevated to the position of Associate Professorship as all applicants found to be fulfilling required criteria thus confirming the key parameters stipulated by university rules and legislation.
Six senior Assistant Professors, who applied for the promotion are Dr Damtew Darza from School of Pedagogical & Behavioral Sciences, Psychology department; Dr Simon Shibru and Dr Teklu Wegayehu, from Biology department of College of Natural & Computational Sciences; Dr Kinfe Kassa, Water Technology Institute of Water Supply & Environmental Engineering department; Dr Tamiru Shibiru and Ms Gistane Ayele, College of Health & Medical Sciences of Schools of Medicine and Public Health respectively.
Having evaluated and verified the supporting documents from the designated bodies on behalf of all applicants vis-à-vis the university Legislation under Article numbers 55/4/4.2 and 55/4/4.4, AMU Senate found that applicants dully fulfill the mandated parameters i.e. Effective Teaching (40%), Publications (35%), Participation in University affairs (15%) and Professional and related public services (10%) hence all were promoted to the position of Associate Professorship.
It’s learnt that following required criteria for the position of Associate Professorship is stated under AMU Senate Legislation under Article 8 (8.1 to 8.5), which makes it imperative that apart from PhD or its equivalent degree, one must have 4 years of effective teaching experience as an Assistant Professor.
Furthermore one has to have at least 2 articles published in a reputable journal since last promotion or a textbook/book based on original research to his/her credit or 4 realized artistic or professional projects or one published article and two realized artistic or professional projects or one publication and release of one technological package through a nationally accredited mechanism since becoming an Assistant Professor
And most importantly, applicant must show active participation in the affairs of the university along with potential involvement in Community Service (15%) which is mandated by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as part of one’s academic responsibility.
