Arba Minch University (AMU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with Ethiopian Maritime Authority (EMA) to establish Maritime Academy under Arba Minch Institute of Technology (AMiT) on March 28/2025 at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Click here to see more photos.

Eng. Abdulber Shemsu (Director General) of EMA remarked that because of its topography and resource, AMU is selected by the authority. The MoU is important to produce maritime manpower and experts to engage in international maritime market, the director general said. Sharing best practices internally as well externally is the role of the authority, he underscored.

AMU President, Abdella Kemal (PhD, Ing.), during signing ceremony briefing, he gave a lowdown on AMU and said that currently AMU is one of the eight research universities and is one of the first generation public universities in Ethiopia. The aim of AMU is producing competitive experts that act in the country’s development by implementing the obligations of the collaboration successfully as per the terms using senior staffs, he noted.

During the discussion AMU officials have broadly emphasized on the areas for cooperation like curriculum design, research and development. AMiT Scientific Director, Muluneh Lemma (PhD), AMiT Deputy Scientific Director, Bisrat Gisla (PhD) from AMU side and Mr. Firaol Tafa, Captain Kibru Mesfin and Chief Eng. Shewangizaw Kassa from Ethiopian Maritime Authority and others graced the meeting.
