Mr. Hailemariam Atinaf, the ESRI Office focal person at AMU, strengthened the existing collaboration with ESRI since 2021 and renewed the ESRI user license months ago. The partnership focuses on capacity building, project collaboration, and experience sharing through various user conferences.

Abera Uncha (PhD), dean of College of Social Sciences & Humanities, opening the marking ceremony said that gathering together on the GIS Day we not only recognize the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) but also reflect on how this transformative technology is shaping the lives of communities. Dr. Abera also noted that in spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing, we have extended the ESRI license to Jinka University and, in our next plan, we will extend the same to all South Ethiopia Region Universities. The partnership with ESRI is more than about a technology; it’s also about creating a network of skilled professionals who can use GIS to solve the challenges of the communities in the region and outside.

Celebrating GIS Day provides an important platform to raise awareness about the power of geographic information systems (GIS) and their transformative role in shaping our world. GIS Day is a day dedicated to highlight the significance of spatial data and technology in solving real-world problems, advancing research, and driving innovation in various sectors such as urban planning, environmental management, agriculture, and public health.

Some attendees underlining the significant importance of GIS for research and solving community challenges requested that AMU should work hard to maximize the training capacity for inner staff and government sector professionals. The GIS center also should be well furnished to be excellence for other institutions, they remarked.

Currently, Arba Minch University has 500 active users of ArcGIS Online. PhD, MSc and undergraduate students as well as staff from different departments participated in the event; in addition, Dr. Michael Gould, Global Education Manager at ESRI Inc., delivered the message marking the GIS Day virtually.
