Speaking at the opening of the training, Professor Yisehak Kechero, Director of AMU School of Graduate Studies (SGS), stated that the program builds on the previous round in which 12 academic staff completed the training and received certificates. He explained that the initiative aims to strengthen the supervision capacity of PhD holders, associate professors, and professors in order to enhance research performance and improve the quality of graduate education at AMU. Funded by the university in collaboration with the Ethiopian Super-Stars Project, the training seeks to equip academic staff with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to effectively mentor PhD students and nurture future academic leaders, noting that improved supervision is critical for successful doctoral training.
Dr. Andargachew Kassa (Associate Professor), the trainer from Hawassa University, noted that the Ethiopian Super-Stars Project aims to strengthen the capacity of PhD supervisors, enhance the quality of doctoral supervision, and promote professional development across Ethiopian universities. He explained that the initiative focuses on improving coaching, mentoring, and scientific leadership skills, particularly through the application of the ABC model, Autonomy, Belongingness, and Competence, to foster more supportive and effective supervisor–student relationships.
Dr. Alemayehu Worku, Postgraduate Program Coordinator for Teaching and Learning at AMU and the trainee, noted that the second-round training is highly valuable in strengthening participants’ coaching, mentoring, and supervisory skills to better support PhD students. He explained that the training also helped trainees understand how to apply different approaches, including the ABC model to enhance supervisor–student relationships. Another trainee, Dr. Tseganesh Anbese from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of English Language and Literature, remarked that as a newly graduated PhD holder, the training provides a valuable opportunity to learn effective ways of advising, monitoring, and supporting doctoral students. She also emphasized that the program enables participants to gain diverse experiences and insights from senior trainers from Hawassa University on improving coaching, mentoring, and scientific leadership skills.
