Arba Minch University, in collaboration with the VLIR-UOS Institutional University Cooperation (AMU–IUC) project, is organizing a capacity-building training for PhD students who are doing their PhD in Ethiopian universities under the TISP7 project (Transversal institutional strengthening sub-project 7).

1. Training Overview

The training focuses on PhD research skills and gender-inclusive academic practices. It is scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 1, 2026, in a hybrid format.

The program brings together selected active PhD students from five Ethiopian universities:

· Arba Minch University (AMU)

· Wachamo University

· Hawassa University

· Wolaita Sodo University

· Werabe University

2. Training Topics

The training will cover the following areas:

· Formulating the central research question in PhD studies

· Planning and time management in doctoral research (student–supervisor responsibilities)

· Gender and diversity-sensitive research approaches (theory and practice)

· Academic presentation skills (PPT and oral communication)

· Challenges in PhD writing

· Qualitative research: challenges and opportunities

· Quantitative research: challenges and opportunities

· Inclusive stakeholder engagement in PhD research

3. Trainers

 The training will be delivered by distinguished professors from Belgian universities (including KU Leuven, university of Brussels and the University of Antwerp) as well as experienced Ethiopian academics.

4. Participant Selection

A total of 26 PhD candidates will be selected:

· Arba Minch University: 10 candidates (5 female, 5 male)

· Each of the other universities (Wachamo, Hawassa, Wolaita Sodo, Werabe): 4 candidates each (2 female, 2 male)

Eligible applicants should be first- or second-year PhD students who are interested in participating in the training.

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION: PhD TRAINING ON GENDER INCLUSIVITY AND SUCCESSFUL PHD COMPLETION

1. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

· Must be a first-year or second-year PhD student in Ethiopian Universities.
Exception: If suitable female candidates are not available in this category, female university staff that have conducted research, published articles, and are preparing to begin PhD studies may be considered.

· Must be able to fully and voluntarily participate in the training scheduled from July 27 to August 1, 2026, held in an isolated setting in Arba Minch.

· Should demonstrate interest in gender inclusion, time management, and addressing challenges in PhD milestones.

· Priority will be given to applicants with professional experience in their respective fields.

2. Application Process

· Invitations will be issued through the university Academic Program Office and/or Postgraduate Office.

· Applicants must submit:

o A CV in EU format

o A short statement of interest outlining:

o Academic and professional background

o Work experience

o Motivation for attending the training

· Selection will ensure gender balance (50% female and 50% male participants).

4. Evaluation and Selection

· Applications will be reviewed by a committee jointly established by the Postgraduate School of Arba Minch University and the AMU–IUC Project, based on the stated selection criteria.

· The AMU–IUC project will cover accommodation, transport (Bus), and per diem costs for participants from Outside of Arba Minch University.
