Opening the session, Dr. Abera Uncha, dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, underscored the importance of such capacity-building initiatives in enhancing the research competence of academic staff and supporting the professional growth of emerging scholars. He noted that the workshop plays a significant role in improving the quality of doctoral education and advancing the University’s broader commitment to research excellence and academic distinction.

Professor Johnathan Bascom, a seasoned social scientist and geographer as well as a Fulbright Scholar in residence for the 2025/2026 academic year, emphasized the critical need to mentor early-career faculty members and PhD candidates in producing high-quality dissertations. He noted that as doctoral education continues to expand across the country, structured academic guidance and sustained scholarly mentorship are increasingly essential to ensure research excellence and timely degree completion. Throughout the training, Professor Bascom has guided the participants through the dissertation process, from conceptualization to final defense, equipping them with both strategic insight and practical tools for success.

The training integrates focused lectures with interactive discussions, short practical exercises, and collaborative group work, providing participants with a balanced opportunity to deepen their theoretical understanding while sharpening their practical research skills. Backed by strong institutional support, the initiative is expected to make a meaningful contribution to enhancing research productivity and fostering a vibrant scholarly culture at AMU.
