The recognition ceremony followed the successful accreditation of two journals—OMO International Journal of Sciences and Ethiopian International Journal of Engineering and Technology—by the Ministry of Education Ethiopia. In addition, the Ethiopian Journal of Water Science and Technology secured renewal of its accreditation for a second term. With this progress, four out of the university’s five journals are now nationally accredited, all earning a “B” grade status.

Dr.-Ing. Abdella Kemal, President of the University, stated that limited access to accredited journals has long been a critical bottleneck affecting the timely graduation of PhD students. He emphasized that the accreditation of the university’s journals will significantly expand opportunities for both students and faculty to publish their research in a timely manner.

He further noted that the achievement strengthens the institution’s credibility and enhances its capacity to build strategic partnerships at both national and international levels. The President also underscored the need to sustain the momentum by advancing the journals toward international accreditation standards.

Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation, highlighted that the accreditation of academic programs, laboratories, and journals is a key component of the university’s performance indicators. He explained that such achievements validate the quality and reliability of research outputs, enhance the global competitiveness of graduates, and create broader opportunities for partnerships and external funding.

He also recalled that the university had previously secured accreditation for two academic programs in medical and health sciences, noting that the recent success in journal accreditation will serve as a strong impetus for future institutional efforts and generate wide-ranging benefits. Dr. Teklu added that the accreditation process is rigorous and resource-intensive, requiring sustained commitment and coordinated effort, and expressed appreciation to all contributors who made the achievement possible.

Dr. Simeon Derke, Director of Research Publication, Documentation, and Dismination, stated that the accomplishment was achieved through a comprehensive evaluation process aligned with national and international standards. He noted that substantial improvements were made in journal quality, editorial processes, website development, and digital visibility to meet the stringent accreditation requirements.

During the ceremony, certificates of appreciation were presented to editorial board members and chief editors for their invaluable contributions.

The recognition underscores Arba Minch University’s strong commitment to advancing research excellence and strengthening its position in the academic publishing landscape.
