Arba Minch, Ethiopia – Researchers at Arba Minch University's College of Agricultural Sciences have developed a groundbreaking dual-purpose liquid organic fertilizer that enhances soil health and boosts crop yields.Click here to see more photos

Dr. Gezahagn Garo, Principal Investigator of the project, explained that the fertilizer serves two main purposes: providing essential plant nutrients and rehabilitating salt-affected soils. Its effectiveness has been rigorously tested through laboratory experiments, greenhouse trials, and field applications using onions as the test crop. "The trials demonstrated the fertilizer’s ability to restore saline soils and significantly improve onion yields," Dr. Gezahagn said.

The liquid fertilizer, which acts rapidly and can be easily diluted with water, is suitable for all soil types except acidic soils prevalent in the Ethiopian highlands.

Ethiopia faces growing issues of soil salinity due to high evapotranspiration, irrigation with saline water from Rift Valley lakes, and inadequate drainage systems. Dr. Gezahagn emphasized the urgent need for speedy remedies, highlighting that this fertilizer provides an effective and sustainable remedy for salinity-affected farmlands.

The fertilizer is produced from locally available agricultural byproducts, including banana pseudostems, making it one of the most cost-effective organic fertilizers in Ethiopia. In addition to being eco-friendly, the fertilizer is rich in potassium and other essential nutrients, addressing the health and environmental concerns posed by chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Dr. Gezahagn noted that the fertilizer’s next phase involves testing on farmers’ fields to validate its performance under real farming conditions. The university aims to promote its adoption across farming communities to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.

This innovative fertilizer underscores Arba Minch University’s commitment to solve critical agricultural challenges and advancing sustainable practices.
