Arba Minch University/AMU/ College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Arba Minch General Hospital/AMGH/, Ethiopia, and Menzies School of Health Research, Australia, inked an agreement to conduct the collaborative Study entitled “A revised ‘tafenoquine’ dose to improve radical cure for ‘vivax’ malaria” at Nech Sar Campus on 13th September, 2024. Click here to see more photos.

Dr. Desta Galcha, Chief Executive Director of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, emphasized the agreement will have a pivotal role in advancing expertise in malaria diagnostics. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in improving healthcare outcomes and reaffirmed AMU's commitment to strengthening partnerships to tackle future health challenges.

Dr. Anteneh Kassaye, Chief Executive Director of Arba Minch General Hospital, said that it’s his pleasure to participate in the project and AMGH will support it by professional expertise and logistic as much as possible till the end.

Dr. Tamiru Shibru, the principal investigator of the research project and a PhD candidate, gave a lowdown on collaborative efforts with Australia's Menzies School of Health Research focusing on alternative malaria treatment, particularly vivax. Menzies along with AMU and AMGH has been awarded funding by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council/NHMRC/ to conduct the Study; it is also a requirement to sign the agreement with partnering institutions to conduct the Study, he added. He remarked that $377,002 is allocated fund for accomplishing the study.

Dr. Kamala Thriemer, the principal investigator from Menzies, participating the ceremony virtually, remarked that this collaboration has been functional since 2018 and now it’s accommodating two PhD students and two possible PhD candidates on advanced molecular laboratory training. She also appreciated the administrative support provided for the implementation of the projects from the two Ethiopian institutions that encourages for more collaborative projects.

Staffs from AMU College of Medicine and Health Sciences and AMGH were in attendance where as Dr. Kamala Thriemer, a member from Menzies School of Health Research, participated virtually.
