PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The mining sector is a key driver of Ethiopia’s economic growth through employment generation, foreign currency earnings, and supply of raw materials for industry and construction. Despite this potential, large areas of South Ethiopia, including Kore Zone, Goreka Woreda, remain insufficiently explored due to limited geoscientific data. In response, the South Ethiopia Regional Mines Authority (SERMA), in collaboration with Arba Minch University (AMU), proposes an integrated mineral resource assessment to support sustainable mineral development and investment promotion. The project entitled “Integrated Assessment of Gemstone, Metallic, and Industrial Mineral Potential in Kore Zone, Goreka Woreda” aims to identify and evaluate the area’s mineral potential through a systematic and scientifically sound approach. The study will involve compilation of existing data, geological mapping, geochemical and geophysical surveys, stream sediment sampling, pitting and trenching, laboratory analyses, and mineral potential mapping. Emphasis will be placed on gemstones, metallic minerals, and industrial minerals with economic relevance for construction and manufacturing. The total project budget is 3,370,364 Ethiopian Birr, of which 56% will be covered by SERMA and 44% by Arba Minch University, demonstrating strong institutional commitment and partnership. The expected output includes updated geological and mineral potential maps, identification of priority target areas, and reliable datasets to attract investors and support small- and medium-scale mining initiatives. The project outcomes will contribute to job creation, regional economic development, and informed mineral resource management in Kore Zone, Goreka woreda.
