AMU’s Department of Mathematics along with Ethiopian Norwegian Network in Computational Mathematics (ENNCOMAT) collaboratively held intensive two week training on scientific computing with python for female Mathematics and Statistics Graduates from September 30 to October 11, 2024. The training aimed to empower female graduates in mathematics and statistics with advanced scientific computing skills. Click here to see more photos.
The trainees, 20 female first and second degree graduates and staff members from Mathematics and Statistics departments at AMU, were selected through a competitive approach to participate in the training.
Expert lecturers, such as Prof. Claus Führer of Lund University, Sweden, and Prof. Anne Kværnø of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, coordinated the training. Students engaged in hands-on Python programming group work, solidifying their skills through practical application.
Prof. Kværnø, the project's main coordinator from NTNU, highlighted the training's significance emphasizing the crucial role of python programming in scientific computations. "This program provides valuable skills, shared experiences, and in overall positively contributes to the participants' academic and professional journeys," she remarked.
Dr. Tewodros Berhanu, dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences at AMU, acknowledged the unique challenges women face in the academic sphere, particularly in technical fields. "This training strengthens technical competencies of female graduates; we believe that by equipping them with essential scientific programming skills, we can enhance their performance and employability in this vital area," he noted.
Dr. Simon Derke, Coordinator of the project at AMU, highlighted the training as a major initiative of ENNCOMAT for the 2024 academic year, emphasizing its crucial role in advancing the scientific computing skills of female graduates. He also discussed potential future opportunities stemming from this intensive training and the broader project activities.
Dr. Endalkachew Teshome, head of the Department of Mathematics, underscored the training's significant contribution to staff development and future collaborations.
The partnership project, funded by NORPART 2021/10167, is a collaborative effort between esteemed institutions: the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Hawassa University (HU), Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), and Arba Minch University (AMU). Launched in 2022, the project aims to elevate the quality of education and research in applied mathematics, fosters stronger cooperation between Norwegian and Ethiopian partners; it also increases interaction between academia and the Ethiopian industry and public sectors.
