The Day is celebrated at four different Campuses of the university from 3-8/2012 on presence of each campus College Deans. In the entire program, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the late Prime Minister H.E Ato Meles Zenawi at the start of the event.
Speaking on the Occasion at Nech Sar Campus Dr. Nejb Mohammed said, this year’s celebration would be unique as it is a day that the Ethiopian people recommit to realize the Vision of the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. And also gave this genuine promise to stand against poverty and to contribute what they could assist the country’s effort to bring about sustainable development, especially for the successful implementation of the Growth and Transformation plan to see a new and prosperous Ethiopia which can be of hard working by duty –bound fellow citizen in all fields of their specialization.

General objectives
The general objective of this program is providing the government and the society with qualified legal professionals who have the required legal knowledge, skill and integrity to serve the public, and strengthen the rule of law and good governance through research, consultation and community service.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the program are:
Producing LL.B Degree graduates ready, willing and able to perform at the highest possible professional and ethical standards of the legal profession, to work in every part of the country, and to begin work with a minimum of practical orientation;
Undertaking practical research concerning the role of law in the country and the use, efficiency, and effectiveness of the legal system;
Contributing to the improvement of the practice of law and the attainment of justice in the country through constructive and practical consultation and functional interaction with courts, public and private practitioners, and public;
Engaging in community service with the view to achieve one of the main purposes of the university and update the University’s status
Giving overall legal advice to make sure the university materializes its objectives while involving in different transactions with least possible costs.
Maximizing the University’s endeavor of delivering services to the society by involving in different activities in relation to human right protection particularly that of women and child rights, ensuring good governance, maintaining rule of law and justice, etc., through the activities of the department
Providing practical oriented program of study which will equip students with the knowledge expertise that will qualify them as graduates to join any of the fields that require or benefit from legal training, in or outside of the mainstream legal professions, and in any location in the country
- Elucidating to all law students, through repeated practice in coursed and in such extra-curricular activities, the ability, willingness and habit of :
- Seeking law through research,
- Thinking logically
- Analyzing critically, and
- Communicating clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
- Installing deeply in student, through a set of building block exercise that demonstrate the interaction between the parts of law:
- An in-depth understanding of basic notions of law and fairness, the constitutional foundation, and of human rights,
- The necessary skills to interpret and apply the law to real situations, and
- The necessary knowledge and skills to practice law in a way that serves people.
- Building and strengthen the students’ character, attitudes, judgment and confidence in service through discussion, reflection and example.
- The scope and limitations of the legal discipline and legal methods,
- The need of study and understand how related disciplines may assist the law and the legal system to achieve its objectives, and
- The impact of law and other forces that affect the life and arrangement of society

Mission
Department of law of Arba Minch University has a mission of offering relevant, efficient and quality education and training; conducting demand driven research and rendering efficient community services.
According to the Ethiopian Higher Education Proclamation No. 650/2009 and its own charter (Council of Ministers Charter Regulation No 235/2011), AMU is mandated to establish, organize and determine the status, functions and responsibilities of academic units, and close down any of them when the University finds it appropriate. Accordingly, department of law is established to function as an academic unit under college of social science and humanities. The department is also mandated to:
- Design and implement undergraduate and graduate programmes and short-term training in accordance with the needs of the university;
- Publish and disseminate research works as well as hold discussion forums to deliberate upon the result;
- Establish and run academic journals and newsletters;
- Upgrade the qualifications of its academic staff and enhance continuously their professional competency;
- Contribute specially to the institutional capacity building of other public and non-profit -making private institutions, including the upgrading of the qualifications of their academic status;
- Provide consultancy services to governmental and non-governmental organizations, and the community;
- Cooperate with the Institutional Quality Assurance Directorate on relevance of education and quality matters;
- Carry out such other activities that accord with its objectives and the mission, vision and objectives of the university.
Vision
The department of law aspires to be one of the three best law schools in Ethiopia by 2020.

Arba Minch University (AMU) is one of the well-established universities found in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People's Regional State (SNNPRS). It is located at Arba Minch town, 500 km South of Addis Ababa. The main campus of the university is situated at the eastern foot of Gamo mountain ranges and adjacent to the vast low land stretching towards Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo which form part of the East African Rift Valley. The spectacular features of these twin Rift Valley lakes, Abaya and Chamo, impart a picturesque view to the University as it is viewed from the main campus hills. The Lakes are essential components of the area in view of socio-economic value and ecological diversity. Two of its newly established campuses are named after these two lakes while the third new campus is named after one of the wonderful national parks of the country - Nech Sar. The gifted land of the South offers a huge opportunity to the University to venture into new territories of education, research and development.
Currently, the University comprises of five colleges and the institute. Department of law is one of the departments hosted in Chamo campus under college of social science and humanities. It was established in 2010 to train legal professionals and assist the development endeavor of the country.
